Students interested in studying international relations should plan their course of study in consultation with Dr. Randall Jones, the advisor for the International Relations field. An outline of the program is provided below.

I. Core Requirements
9 Hrs
POL 2103 Elements of Political Science
POL 2013 Information Management in PLTSC
POL 4993 *Democratic Governance [The Capstone Course]
*Students should schedule this course the semester prior to graduation.

II. The International Relations field

A. The field Core - 9 Hrs.
POL 2303 Introduction to World Politics
POL 2713 Introduction to Comparative Politics
POL 4543 International Cooperation

POL 2303 & POL 2713 are GATEWAY courses into the IR Area. Both are prerequisites for most upper division offerings in this field and, consequently, should be taken early in one's course of study. It is highly advisable that POL 4543 - International Cooperation- be taken soon thereafter.

B. Guided Electives - 18 Hrs.
The Political Science Department offers a number of courses in international and comparative politics. Any of those listed below can be taken to fulfill the guided elective requirement for the International Relations field. Other courses may be suitable if prior approval is received from the field Advisor.*

____ Politics & the World Economy
____ International Law
____ American Foreign Policy
____ International Security Studies
____ Economic Statecraft
____ Contemporary International Issues
____ European Politics
____ Asian Politics
____ African Political Systems
____ Latin American Politics
____ Politics of Mexico
____ Chinese Politics

*When approved, Seminars (POL 4911-3), Topics (POL 2001-3), and Advanced Topics (POL 3991-3) may be counted.

III. Related Electives
18 Hrs
The department encourages you to select courses in related areas with the remainder of the elective hours you have. Courses selected should support the objectives of a Liberal Arts Education and of the B.A. in Political Science. You are encouraged to consider courses from such disciplines as History, Economics, the Humanities, or Geography.

The department strongly advises two years of Foreign Language study as part of this field. Hours completed can count towards satisfying your General Education requirement, with remaining hours counting toward satisfying hours in the Related Elective.
