Survey #3 - Fall 2000 Detailed Summary of Results
Number
of Surveys Returned = 60 DIVIDED
GOVERNMENT Over the last two
decades including the most recent election, both houses of the state
legislature have been controlled by one party, the Democrats.
Since 1995 and from 1987 to 1991, Oklahoma was led by a Republican
governor. It has been argued
that divided government produces, at best, small incremental policy
initiatives and budgets, and at worst, stalemate, gridlock, and inaction. Others argue that divided government results in
compromise-driven policies and budgets, preventing costly excesses or
mistakes. Indicate
whether you agree or disagree with the following statements. 10.
“In the past, the political process in Oklahoma has
promulgated public policies that better reflect the diverse preferences of
the electorate during those years in which there was divided
government.”
11.
“Over the next decade, the political process in Oklahoma is
more likely to promulgate public policies that better reflect the diverse
preferences of the electorate during years under divided government.”
12.
Regardless of your responses to the previous two questions, do
you agree or disagree that divided government is more effective at the
national level at reflecting the diverse preferences of the
electorate?
