Liberal Arts Honors Program

The College of Liberal Arts Honors Program began in the fall of 1988.

The Honors Program is available to all full-time students with proven academic achievement. Each course is derived from the regular curriculum and is a more detailed inquiry into the subject.

Though the course is not designed to be more difficult, it offers more specialized materials for the person majoring in that field and is viewed as a value-added course for non-majors who wish a more in-depth view of the discipline.

Proven academic achievement for the Honors Program is defined as an ACT test score of 22 or higher, or a score of 18-22 with a letter of recommendation which has been submitted for evaluation and approval by the Honors Program Faculty Committee.

Upon electing an option or options, the student should visit with the mentor from his/her department and sign a contract with the Honors teacher. A student may choose one or both of the following options:

To receive a College Major Honors Certificate, a student must complete the course requirements for graduation with a 3.0 overall grade average and:

--9 hours of Liberal Arts courses in the major that are designated
                        as Honors courses, and
--3 hours of directed study with the Departmental Mentor producing
an undergraduate thesis in the discipline
To receive a College-Wide/Honors Certificate a student must complete with a 3.0 overall grade average 15 hours of Liberal Arts courses designated as Honors courses. They must consist of:
        --6 major hours, and
--9 hours outside the major representing at least
                three different disciplines.
Upon completion of degree requirements for University of Central Oklahoma and the Honors Program requirements, the honors courses will be designated on the student's transcript. The student will receive a certificate or certificates indicating the option or options chosen.
