Dr. Terry M. Clark, Department Chair

    Professor, journalism and photography courses. Member of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame. Board member of The Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation and Freedom of Information, Oklahoma. Coordinator of Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame. Has 20 years experience with newspapers, including owning The Waurika News-Democrat. Worked part-time at The Oklahoman as a copy editor, wire editor and headline writer. Published in Editor and Publisher, the Oklahoma Publisher and Publishers Auxiliary. Won numerous statewide awards in writing, photography and editing. Writes monthly column for the Oklahoma Press Association Oklahoma Publisher and conducts workshops in writing, editing, photography and layout and design for Oklahoma professional journalists and writers. Research interests include community journalism, media ethics, international media systems, newspapers, photography and journalism education. Dr. Roz Miller, Assistant Department Chair

Assistant Professor, communication studies, leadership communication, gender and diversity, and rhetoric/public discourse. Awarded the 2008 Liberal Arts Outstanding Service Award; the 2003 Oklahoma Speech Theater Communication Association Fred Tewell Outstanding Communication Professor Award; and the 2002 Liberal Arts Outstanding Creative Activity Award. Member of the Women's Studies Program Committee; coach of the Individual Events Forensics Team (1997-2004) which won national championships in three events in 2004; and a participant in Leadership UCO, Class V (2007-2008) and Educators' Leadership Combo Academy, Class XI (2008-2009). Her students have presented research papers at the Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association, the Sooner Communication Conference, the Central States Communication Association, and the Theodore Clevenger, Jr. Undergraduate Honors Conference at the Southern States Communication Association Convention. Research interests focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning utilizing arts-related teaching approaches to work toward critical consciousness and social justice. Roz Miller, Assistant Department Chair
     Dr. Kathryne Roden

Dr. Kathryne Roden, Core Curriculum Coordinator

    Teaches courses in Fundamentals of Speech, Introduction to Human Communication and Communication for Teachers. These classes facilitate the undergraduate students’ development of public speaking skills and understanding of the communication process and its relevance in their everyday lives and future professions. Recently, she developed an intercession course titled Cinematic Communication designed to increase students’ knowledge and use of film in academic, civic and professional presentations. Previous experience includes teaching graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma in The Adult Learner, Qualitative Research and Contemporary Issues in Education. Her passion for students and their experiences in learning grew from her experiences as a speech language pathologist and later as an educational consultant as she worked with student learning development in higher education, the public schools and the private sector. Her current research involves communication in the cinematic classroom, the roles of technology and aesthetics in transformative teaching and learning as well as communication in crisis events through the lens of chaos and complexity theories and qualitative research, specifically interpretivism and interviewing. Presentations include papers presented at the International Congress of Qualitative Research, American Educational Research Association, Transformational Learning Conference, Chaos and Complexity Conference, and the Imaginative Education Research Group Conference. Holds a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and a master of education (M.Ed.) in Adult and Higher Education, both from the University of Oklahoma. She also holds a master of science (M.S.) degree in communication disorders from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in communication from the University of Oklahoma.

David Bennett
  Dr. Merry Buchanan   

Dr. Merry Buchanan

    Assistant Professor, organizational and corporate communication courses. Has taught previously at Texas Christian University, University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University. Presents research papers at academic conferences such as the National Communication Association, International Communication Association, as well as all four regional communication conferences. Research emphases include organizational, interpersonal and instructional communication. Publications include book chapters, scholarly communication journal articles, communication textbook instructors manuals and supplementary materials. Her professional experience is in training and development, working as a communication consultant for Tinker Air Force Base, Communication Workers of America, the Department of Defense, Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and Conference of State Bank Supervisors. Most recently, Dr. Buchanan assisted UCO in winning a large training contract for the university. She designed the communication curriculum and trained 6,700 non-supervisory personnel at Tinker Air Force Base. Recent awards include Faculty Merit Award for Teaching, Faculty Merit Award for Research, Best Presentation in the Liberal Arts Faculty Research Colloquium, and was voted one of UCO's Top Ten Favorite Professors. She sponsors students' scholarly research as they present in Research Day, Liberal Arts Symposium, and Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association. Dr. Buchanan is the faculty advisor for two UCO student organizations: Mortar Board and the Association for Women in Communications. Edith Kinney Gaylord Professor of Journalism Ethics

 

     Professor. Media ethics and media law courses and seminars. Has more than 30 years of experience in journalism and professional writing. Worked for newspapers in Indiana and Florida, including The Orlando Sentinel, as a reporter and editor. Has been a nationally-syndicated feature writer and has won numerous writing awards. Writes on media issues for the Oklahoma Gazette. Admitted to practice law in the state of Oklahoma. Maintains a legal practice limited to media-related issues and serves as an expert witness in media-related cases. Member of the boards of directors of the Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and Freedom of Information Oklahoma, Inc. Also a member of Kappa Tau Alpha national journalism honor society. Has been a recipient of the American Press Institute’s James H. Ottaway Fellowship and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Gannett Foundation Teaching Fellowship. Research interests are in media law and ethics, media convergence, bias and propaganda, and journalism theory. Dr. William Hickman

    Professor, journalism, public relations, media law and computer-assisted reporting courses. Member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Public Relations Society of America, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and FOI Oklahoma. Admitted to practice law in the state of Oklahoma. Has 30 years of experience in journalism and public relations. Worked for daily newspapers in Oklahoma and Texas, including The Dallas Morning News, as a reporter and editor, and for Mutual of Omaha insurance company as a corporate communications specialist. Worked 15 years part-time on the central desk of The Oklahoman as a copy editor, wire editor and headline writer. Research interests are in the Web as a news and information source, media law, military-media relationships and newsroom management. A marathon runner. Jill M. Kelsey, APR

    Instructor, public relations, advertising and history courses. Intern coordinator for the journalism sequence in Central Oklahoma's Mass Communication Department, a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, the Oklahoma City chapter of Public Relations Society of America, and adviser for the Central Oklahoma chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.  She is an accredited (APR) member of the national PRSA organization. She was selected College of Liberal Arts Professor of the Year for 2003-2004, was recipient of the Oklahoma City Women In Communication Byliner Award for Education in 2005, and was the winner of the Oklahoma City PRSA Paul E. Dannelley, Jr. Harmony Award in 2002. She received the President's Service Award from the Oklahoma City PRSA chapter in 1995. She has served the local PRSA chapter as secretary, board member and academic committee chair, and continues work on the accreditation committee. She has 18 years experience in the field of public relations, and has received awards for her published nonfiction. Research interests are in crisis management and research methods for public relations practitioners. Dr. Kole Kleeman

    Professor, public relations, victims and the media, and cultural studies and the media courses. Member of the graduate faculty. Teaching and research interests are in victims and the media with a particular focus on interviewing traumatized people; the effects on journalists as witnesses to human tragedy and the effects of post traumatic stress disorder on people who are survivors of horrific events. Regularly teaches the Victims and the Media Seminar and conducts workshops for journalists and university faculty on trauma and emotional injury. He has developed new curriculum in media studies courses including Gays and Lesbians in Film and Media, and Gender, Race, Class and the Media. He has been published in the American Journal of Semiotics and has given papers at the National Communication Association, the International Film and Literature Conference at Florida State University, the Central States Communication Association and recently published "A Media Literacy Approach to Violence: Anti-Violence Education Strategies in the Classroom" in the Texas Speech Communication Journal Online (April 2008). He received a university award for excellence in teaching in 2003 and the Neely Award for Teaching Excellence in 2007. Received bachelor and master's degrees from the Department of Speech Communication, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill. Earned a Ph.D. from the School of Communication, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.

Research interests focus on conversation analysis, with an emphasis in how conversational practices are adapted to specialized interactional settings such as service encounters, public speeches, and news interviews. Sandra Martin

    Lecturer, advertising and public relations courses. Taught previously at Oklahoma City University. She has worked and consulted in her field for more than 20 years and, in addition to full-time teaching responsibilities Professor Martin continues to serve as a consultant in public relations and advertising for regional and national companies and agencies. Past and current clients include McDonald’s, Lear Jet, Quaker, Weight Watchers and United States Paint and Chemical. In 1990, she was named recipient of the Sears Teaching Excellence Award; in 1991, she received The Fred Jones Teaching Excellence Award; in 2007, she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from Oklahoma City University. In 1991, she was named the American Advertising Federation’s Tenth District Educator of the Year. In 2006, she was named to Outstanding Teachers in America and was listed in Marquee’s Who’s Who. She has worked in advertising agencies in Chicago, Oklahoma City and Dallas. She is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. She has served on the board of directors of the Oklahoma City Advertising Club and of the Society of Professional Journalists. She advised student teams in the American Advertising Federation national competition for 12 years. The teams she advised set a record for finishing among the top three positions for 10 consecutive years. She served as department chair of mass communications at Oklahoma City University where she led the department from its inception to become the largest undergraduate major in the College of Arts and Sciences.    Professor, journalism, graphic design and public relations courses. Assistant editor of Private Practice magazine. Has been a reporter and editor for the Springdale News in Arkansas and the Norman Transcript. Also worked in public relations for the University of Arkansas College of Agriculture and Oklahoma State University Department of Assessment. Was a public relations volunteer for the American Diabetes Association in Oklahoma City. Member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Kappa Tau Alpha journalism honor society, and was named 1994-95 Outstanding Faculty Woman by Central Oklahoma’s Association of Women Students. Recognized as an outstanding faculty member by Sigma Kappa sorority in March 1999. Member of 1999 statewide faculty transfer curriculum transfer committee and 2000 College of Liberal Arts Dean Search Committee. Jesse Miller

    Assistant professor, photography courses. Taught previously at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Professional freelance and fine art photographer for more than 10 years, his images have been shown in galleries across the United States and internationally. Recent exhibitions include the Nevada Triennial and the Bridge Gallery at the Las Vegas City Hall. He is also co-owner of A6 Gallery, a fine art gallery that specializes in showing works of up coming artists, based in Henderson, Nev. Other accomplishments include a series of public art works, including a three year redesign of the fine arts plaza at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, which was recently completed. Dr. David Nelson

    Assistant Professor, broadcasting courses, and faculty adviser to KUCO-FM, the student radio station at UCO. His first job landed him at the ABC affiliate, KSWO-TV in Lawton, as production assistant and sports photographer. He later switched to radio at KMGZ-FM in Lawton as sports director, assistant program director, midday personality and public service director, then went to KQLI-FM in Lawton as public service director, assistant program director and afternoon personality. He also was news director at KVRW-FM in Lawton. He moved to KMGL-FM in Oklahoma City and to KPNT-FM in Houston as on-air personality and promotions assistant. He has provided the color analysis for the Class 6A Lawton Eisenhower football broadcasts and the NAIA powerhouse Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers. Research interests include the agenda-setting and gatekeeping functions of the media. He has provided the voiceover work for Edmond's Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority promotion presentation, Simple Simeon's Pizza training videos, the City of Bethany's Centennial Celebration video and the University of Central Oklahoma's Alumni Banquet presentation. Dr. Gwen Olivier

Dr. Steve Pratt

   Steven B. Pratt, (Ph. D., University of Oklahoma, 1985) is a professor in the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Central Oklahoma. His research interests focus on cultural identification, as well as language and social interaction, with an emphasis on identifying American Indian communicative behaviors. Dr. Pratt’s research has been published in the following scholarly journals and edited books: Research on Language and Social Interaction, Intercultural Communication Studies, Cultural Communication and Intercultural Contact, International Intercultural Communication Annual, Our Voices, and Communicating Ethnic and Cultural Identity. Dr. Pratt was born and raised on the Osage Indian reservation, serves as a traditional and ceremonial leader of the Osage people, and works extensively with the revitalization of the Osage language. With only three native speakers of the Osage language left, Dr. Pratt recorded three volumes of the Osage language focusing on tribal customs, ceremonies, and day-to-day life activities. Mark Scott

   Instructor, broadcasting courses. He teaches various courses in television production, including Basic Television Production, Non-Linear Editing, and Television Field Production. Has ten years of television production experience, including work with "Inside Edition," "Hardcopy," ESPN, The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, And 1 Mix Tour, National Reigning Horse Association, Outdoor Life Network, Major League Baseball, COX Sports, and the Cotton Bowl as well as work with many other broadcasting outlets. In addition, he produces the Oklahoma High School Sports Express, which airs locally in the Oklahoma City media market. Also plays a key role in the video production of UCO athletics, which allows him to train UCO broadcasting students and give them real world experience in the production of live NCAA sporting events. He has a passion for documentary film making and had the privilege of working on his first full-length feature in 2004 for Major League Baseball Productions, which he hopes to do more of in the future. Dr. Keith Swezey

    Professor, Media Writing, Broadcast News, Advanced Broadcast News and Audio Production courses and Director of Academic Broadcasting at UCO. Has won numerous national, regional and state awards for his reporting and documentary work including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award given by RTNDA, the National Association of Electronic Journalists. Serves as adviser to the UCO student chapter of the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association. News director for the broadcast newsroom for KUCO-FM (Z-99) radio and KCSU-TV, public service outlets operated by the Academic Broadcasting Services of UCO. Research interests focus on broadcast journalism and international mass communication. Professional service includes 15 years as a broadcast news reporter, documentary producer and news director. Member, Radio-Television News Directors Association, Broadcast Education Association (BEA, National) and Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association (OBEA). Dr. Christy Vincent

    Assistant Professor, interpersonal, organizational and corporate communication courses. Holds a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law. Research interests include conflict management, mediation, change management, and training and development. Her dissertation, "Understanding Teachers’ Accounts of Conflicts in Public School Settings: An Ethnographically-based, Ethnomethodological Investigation," received the University of Oklahoma Dissertation Prize in the Social Sciences and Humanities and the Ragan-Kramer-Wieder Qualitative Dissertation Award from the University of Oklahoma Department Of Communication. Has taught continuing education courses for public school teachers in Oklahoma through the Great Expectations Institute. Professional experience is in management, sales and product development in private industry. Most recently served as an internal organizational effectiveness consultant for INTEGRIS Health, where her projects included management and staff training, leadership development, 360-degree assessment, employee opinion surveys, strategic planning, HR metrics and New Employee Orientation. One of the teaching tools used in training programs, a learning map titled Serving Our Community, won the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) Award of Excellence in the category of Experiential Learning. Mark Zimmerman

     Instructor, photography courses. Teaches courses in Adobe Photoshop. Was Director of Instructional Photography, overseeing the department's darkroom and studio, until the spring of 2000. Was chief photographer for The Edmond Sun for four years, where he covered everything from spot news, features and everyday Edmond community life. His images of the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle tragedy were published worldwide .Won 12 first-place awards in photography from The Associated Press, one national first-place photo award from Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and a second-place national award from the National Press Photographer's Association while he was at The Sun. One of his photos was featured in the "Week in Pictures" on MSNBC's Web site. In the summer of 2001, Zimmerman's photo of a solar car race taken in front of UCO was published as the "Thousand Words" double-truck image in Newsweek magazine. Currently freelances for the Associated Press, Getty Images, the Tulsa World and a variety of other news and commercial publications. Has recently taken up the hobby of Civil War-era wet-plate photography, giving him new challenges in capturing images. Jeff Hagy

    General Manager for Academic Broadcasting Services. Responsible for the day-to-day planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the department’s broadcast operation. A native of southwest Oklahoma, Hagy has more than a decade of corporate experience in corporate video, public relations, internal communications, crisis communications and strategic planning. Additionally, he has extensive experience in broadcast and information-based technologies. In 2001-2006, he served as coordinator for Cameron University’s Distance Learning program in Lawton, Okla. He also has held several management positions with Fortune 500 companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Celanese Chemicals, including video producer, public relations manager and North America communications coordinator, where he was responsible for the company’s internal and external communication strategies for North and Central America.

Field experience consists of stints as a reporter and/or editor at several Oklahoma daily and weekly newspapers, including the Chickasha Daily Express, Duncan Banner, Sulphur Times-Democrat, Lawton Constitution and the Newcastle Pacer. His work as managing editor helped win the Newcastle Pacer back-to-back Sequoyah Awards as sweepstakes winner of the Oklahoma Press Association Better Newspaper Contest in 2005 and 2006. He’s a winner of 11 individual awards in the annual contest sponsored by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists. Teaching experience consists of stints as student publications manager at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Northern Oklahoma College. In 2003, his students won the Oklahoma SPJ First Amendment Award for exposing an unauthorized business deal between the president of Eastern Oklahoma State and a Florida for-profit company. The student newspaper’s coverage helped spark an investigation by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and an eventual grand jury indictment in Florida. He holds a bachelor of arts (B.A) degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism and masters of arts (M.A.) in behavioral science, both from Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Phone: 974-5123.
