Dr. Roz Miller, Assistant Department Chair Assistant Professor, communication studies, leadership
communication, gender and diversity, and rhetoric/public discourse. Awarded
the 2008 Liberal Arts Outstanding Service Award; the 2003 Oklahoma Speech
Theater Communication Association Fred Tewell Outstanding Communication
Professor Award; and the 2002 Liberal Arts Outstanding Creative Activity
Award. Member of the Women's Studies Program Committee; coach of the
Individual Events Forensics Team (1997-2004) which won national
championships in three events in 2004; and a participant in Leadership UCO,
Class V (2007-2008) and Educators' Leadership Combo Academy, Class XI

Speech Theatre Communication Association, the Sooner Communication

Dr. Kathryne Roden, Core Curriculum Coordinator
Teaches
courses in Fundamentals of Speech, Introduction to Human Communication and
Communication for Teachers. These classes facilitate the undergraduate
students’ development of public speaking skills and understanding of the
communication process and its relevance in their everyday lives and future
professions. Recently, she developed an intercession course titled Cinematic
Communication designed to increase students’ knowledge and use of film in
academic, civic and professional presentations. Previous experience includes
teaching graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma in The Adult
Learner, Qualitative Research and Contemporary Issues in Education. Her
passion for students and their experiences in learning grew from her
experiences as a speech language pathologist and later as an educational
consultant as she worked with student learning development in higher
education, the public schools and the private sector. Her current research
involves communication in the cinematic classroom, the roles of technology
and aesthetics in transformative teaching and learning as well as
communication in crisis events through the lens of chaos and complexity
theories and qualitative research, specifically interpretivism and
interviewing. Presentations include papers presented at the International
Congress of Qualitative Research, American Educational Research Association,
Transformational Learning Conference, Chaos and Complexity Conference, and
the Imaginative Education Research Group Conference. Holds a doctor of

Dr. Merry Buchanan Assistant Professor,
organizational and corporate communication courses. Has taught previously at
Texas Christian University, University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City
University. Presents research papers at academic conferences such as the
National Communication Association, International Communication Association,
as well as all four regional communication conferences. Research emphases
include organizational, interpersonal and instructional communication.
Publications include book chapters, scholarly communication journal
articles, communication textbook instructors manuals and supplementary
materials. Her professional experience is in training and development,
working as a communication consultant for Tinker Air Force Base,
Communication Workers of America, the Department of Defense, Oklahoma
Department of Transportation, and Conference of State Bank Supervisors. Most
recently, Dr. Buchanan assisted UCO in winning a large training contract for
the university. She designed the communication curriculum and trained 6,700
non-supervisory personnel at Tinker Air Force Base. Recent awards include
Faculty Merit Award for Teaching, Faculty Merit Award for Research, Best
Presentation in the Liberal Arts Faculty Research Colloquium, and was voted
one of UCO's Top Ten Favorite Professors. She sponsors students' scholarly
research as they present in Research Day, Liberal Arts Symposium, and
Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association. Dr. Buchanan is the
faculty advisor for two UCO student organizations: Mortar Board and the

experience in journalism and professional writing. Worked for newspapers in
Indiana and Florida, including The Orlando Sentinel, as a reporter
and editor. Has been a nationally-syndicated feature writer and has won
numerous writing awards. Writes on media issues for the Oklahoma Gazette.
Admitted to practice law in the state of Oklahoma. Maintains a legal
practice limited to media-related issues and serves as an expert witness in
media-related cases. Member of the boards of directors of the Oklahoma
Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and Freedom
of Information Oklahoma, Inc. Also a member of Kappa Tau Alpha national
journalism honor society. Has been a recipient of the American Press

Instructor, public relations, advertising and history courses. Intern
coordinator for the journalism sequence in Central Oklahoma's Mass Communication
Department, a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, the
Oklahoma City chapter of Public Relations Society of America, and adviser for
the Central Oklahoma chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of
America. She is an accredited (APR) member of the national PRSA organization.
She was selected College of Liberal Arts Professor of the Year for 2003-2004,
was recipient of the Oklahoma City Women In Communication Byliner Award for
Education in 2005, and was the winner of the Oklahoma City PRSA Paul E.
Dannelley, Jr. Harmony Award in 2002. She received the President's Service Award

Dr. Kole Kleeman Professor,
public relations,
victims and the media, and cultural studies and the media courses. Member of the
graduate faculty. Teaching and research interests are in victims and the media
with a particular focus on interviewing traumatized people; the effects on
journalists as witnesses to human tragedy and the effects of post traumatic
stress disorder on people who are survivors of horrific events. Regularly
teaches the Victims and the Media Seminar and conducts workshops for journalists
and university faculty on trauma and emotional injury. He has developed new
curriculum in media studies courses including Gays and Lesbians in Film and
Media, and Gender, Race, Class and the Media. He has been published in the American
Journal of Semiotics and has given papers at the National Communication
Association, the International Film and Literature Conference at Florida State
University, the Central States Communication Association and recently
published "A Media Literacy Approach to Violence: Anti-Violence Education
Strategies in the Classroom" in the Texas Speech Communication Journal Online

fine art photographer for more than 10 years, his images have been shown in
galleries across the United States and internationally. Recent exhibitions
include the Nevada Triennial and the Bridge Gallery at the Las Vegas City
Hall. He is also co-owner of A6 Gallery, a fine art gallery that specializes
in showing works of up coming artists, based in Henderson, Nev. Other
accomplishments include a series of public art works, including a three year
redesign of the fine arts plaza at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, which

Dr. Steve Pratt Steven B. Pratt, (Ph. D., University of Oklahoma, 1985) is a
professor in the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Central
Oklahoma. His research interests focus on cultural identification, as well as
language and social interaction, with an emphasis on identifying American Indian
communicative behaviors. Dr. Pratt’s research has been published in the
following scholarly journals and edited books: Research on Language and Social
Interaction, Intercultural Communication Studies, Cultural Communication and
Intercultural Contact, International Intercultural Communication Annual, Our
Voices, and Communicating Ethnic and Cultural Identity. Dr. Pratt was born and
raised on the Osage Indian reservation, serves as a traditional and ceremonial
leader of the Osage people, and works extensively with the revitalization of the
Osage language. With only three native speakers of the Osage language left, Dr.
Pratt recorded three volumes of the Osage language focusing on tribal customs,
ceremonies, and day-to-day life activities. To assist with teaching and learning
the Osage language, Dr. Pratt developed an Osage orthography, accompanying CD,

Mark Scott
Instructor, broadcasting courses. He teaches various
courses in television production, including Basic Television Production,
Non-Linear Editing, and Television Field Production. Has ten years of television
production experience, including work with "Inside Edition," "Hardcopy," ESPN,
The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, And 1 Mix Tour, National Reigning Horse
Association, Outdoor Life Network, Major League Baseball, COX Sports, and the
Cotton Bowl as well as work with many other broadcasting outlets. In addition,
he produces the Oklahoma High School Sports Express, which airs locally in the
Oklahoma City media market. Also plays a key role in the video production of UCO
athletics, which allows him to train UCO broadcasting students and give them
real world experience in the production of live NCAA sporting events. He has a
passion for documentary film making and had the privilege of working on his
first full-length feature in 2004 for Major League Baseball Productions, which

Alternative Dispute Resolution from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution
at the Pepperdine University School of Law. Research interests include conflict
management, mediation, change management, and training and development. Her
dissertation, "Understanding Teachers’ Accounts of Conflicts in Public School
Settings: An Ethnographically-based, Ethnomethodological Investigation,"
received the University of Oklahoma Dissertation Prize in the Social Sciences
and Humanities and the Ragan-Kramer-Wieder Qualitative Dissertation Award from
the University of Oklahoma Department Of Communication. Has taught continuing
education courses for public school teachers in Oklahoma through the Great
Expectations Institute. Professional experience is in management, sales and
product development in private industry. Most recently served as an internal
organizational effectiveness consultant for INTEGRIS Health, where her projects
included management and staff training, leadership development, 360-degree
assessment, employee opinion surveys, strategic planning, HR metrics and New
Employee Orientation. One of the teaching tools used in training programs, a
learning map titled Serving Our Community, won the Oklahoma Chapter of the
American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) Award of Excellence in the

General Manager for Academic Broadcasting Services. Responsible for the
day-to-day planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the department’s
broadcast operation. A native of southwest Oklahoma, Hagy has more than a decade
of corporate experience in corporate video, public relations, internal
communications, crisis communications and strategic planning. Additionally, he
has extensive experience in broadcast and information-based technologies. In
2001-2006, he served as coordinator for Cameron University’s Distance Learning
program in Lawton, Okla. He also has held several management positions with
Fortune 500 companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Celanese Chemicals,
including video producer, public relations manager and North America
communications coordinator, where he was responsible for the company’s internal

Kelly S. Wray Manager of Student Publications and Adviser to The Vista, UCO's student newspaper. Field experience consists of stints as a reporter and/or
editor at several Oklahoma daily and weekly newspapers, including the
Chickasha Daily Express, Duncan Banner, Sulphur
Times-Democrat, Lawton Constitution and the Newcastle Pacer.
His work as managing editor helped win the Newcastle Pacer back-to-back
Sequoyah Awards as sweepstakes winner of the Oklahoma Press Association Better
Newspaper Contest in 2005 and 2006. He’s a winner of 11 individual awards in the
annual contest sponsored by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists.
Teaching experience consists of stints as student publications manager at
Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Eastern Oklahoma State College and
Northern Oklahoma College. In 2003, his students won the Oklahoma SPJ First
Amendment Award for exposing an unauthorized business deal between the president
of Eastern Oklahoma State and a Florida for-profit company. The student
