Journalism scholarship to honor news executive

An endowed scholarship for outstanding promise in sensitive and ethical journalism has been established in honor of Joe Hight at his alma mater, the University of Central Oklahoma.

Hight, director of information and development for The Oklahoman, is a 1980 journalism grad of UCO and a former editor of The Vista.

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at the University of Washington endowed the scholarship to honor his service as the center's first president and his work with the international program.

Bruce Shapiro, executive director of the Dart Center, praised Hight as a leader in journalism.

"Joe Hight is a great editor and, like most great editors, a great teacher,” Shapiro said. "As one of the newsroom leaders of The Oklahoman at the time of the Murrah Federal Building bombing, he helped show the rest of the American news business how to care for both a community and a staff in the wake of terrorism."

Ad executive establishes endowed scholarship

Oklahoma City advertising executive Gean Atkinson recently established an endowed journalism scholarship in the University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Liberal Arts.

The “Gean B. Atkinson Scholarship for Advertising Excellence” will provide funding opportunities for journalism majors who have an emphasis in advertising or public relations.

A distinguished UCO graduate with both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism, Atkinson chose to establish this endowed scholarship at UCO because of the pride he has in the accomplishments and growth of UCO over the years.

“UCO is one of Oklahoma’s educational treasures. It has made quality higher education available to thousands of Oklahomans. Whether you’re president of AT&T worldwide or Miss America, UCO has helped to unleash the potential of so many who were destined to become leaders across the state and the nation,” Atkinson said.

“UCO did so much for me that I’m delighted now to help those who show promise in the field of advertising and public relations.”

Atkinson carries an impressive resume of successes including his work as a state legislator, director of communications for a former Oklahoma governor, UCO instructor, published author and, as a veteran of two wars, a decorated marine and naval officer. He is president and CEO of his own advertising agency in Oklahoma City, Atkinson Advertising Associates, Inc.

"It is an honor for an award-winning advertising professional like Gean to invest in our students. As a well-known and respected civic leader we are proud to call him an alumnus and friend of the College of Liberal Arts,” said Dr. Pamela T. Washington, dean of the UCO College of Liberal Arts.

Requirements for the scholarship include being a junior or senior journalism major with an emphasis in advertising or public relations, an active member of the professional advertising or public relations community, employed with an organization whose primary function is advertising, recognized as having the potential to become a significant contributor to the industry, and an Oklahoma resident with at least a 2.5 grade point average.

Nine named to Journalism Hall of Fame

Nine Oklahoma journalists were honored this spring during the 38th annual induction ceremonies of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Inductees were William P. Bleakley, publisher of the Oklahoma Gazette of Oklahoma City; Gerry Bonds, news anchor for the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority; Ann DeFrange, a reporter and editor for The Oklahoman; Donna Barron Evers, journalism professor emeritus of Cameron University in Lawton; Bill Harper, operations manager of the Tulsa World; Lindel G. Hutson, Oklahoma bureau chief for The Associated Press; Paul B. Southerland, photographer for The Oklahoman, and Barbara A. Walter and Bill Walter, co-publishers of the Hennessey Clipper.

The induction of Barbara and Bill Walter marks the first time that a husband and wife have been inducted together.

Mark Thomas, executive director of the Oklahoma Press Association, hosted the ceremonies. Dr. Terry M. Clark, chairman of the sponsoring Mass Communication Department at UCO, was master of ceremonies.

More than 150 state journalists, friends and families attended.

"The annual ceremony has become an informal homecoming for distinguished previous honorees," Clark said. "The hall is a virtual Who's Who of Oklahoma Journalism."

Currently, the Journalism Hall of Fame in UCO has more than 330 distinguished members.

Honorees are selected by a committee composed of members of the working press, Society of Professional Journalists and the Hall of Fame.

The hall of fame started in 1971 honoring as many as nine Oklahoma journalists who have more than 10 years of outstanding contributions to local journalism or native journalists who have similar achievements elsewhere.

All members of the Hall of Fame are listed on the Department of Mass Communication’s Web site.
