In addition to some of the finest writing, photography and artwork produced in Oklahoma, each volume of the New Plains Review features a familiar

"Phantom Warriors" the painting that serves as the inspiration for each cover of New Plains Review, returns to the College of Liberal Arts. The image, found on every cover of New Plains since 2000 is based on a painting titled "Phantom Warriors" by acclaimed Native American artist and UCO alum Sherman Chaddlesone.

And now the original artwork has returned to the College of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Gladys Lewis, executive editor of New Plains Review first came across the image in 2000, when it was used as part of another New Plains publication.

"I saw it used on a poster for the Deep Fork Anthology," Dr. Lewis said. "When I took over as executive editor, I knew we needed a visual recognition of some kind."

Dr. Lewis said the painting perfectly captured the character she wanted to project for the journal.

"We have used it in some form for two journals a year ever since," she said. "We have never considered another emblem for the journal."

"We had a wonderful piece of art which I loved immediately, and we began to work with it. As you can see by reviewing the covers, the evolution has been amazing."

New Plains Review, published twice a year from the English Department, provides an outlet for the creative and intellectual efforts of the academic community. Dedicated to fostering and maintaining the written word, New Plains Review gives a collective presentation of a wide range of cultural perspectives and demonstrates the drive toward academic excellence upon which the University of Central Oklahoma is founded.
