Application Procedure For The Master Of Fine Arts Program

Before a student will be admitted to the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing, the student must:

A. Be admitted to the Jackson C. College of Graduate Studies & Research (404 Nigh University Center). You may submit your application for admission online.
B. Meet the GPA requirement: 2.75 overall, or 2.75 in the last 60 hours attempted.
C. Have completed 18 undergraduate hours of English Language and Literature above the freshman undergraduate level with a GPA of 3.00 or higher.*
D. Submit a writing sample consisting of approximately 25 pages of a single project. E. Submit a one- to- two-page statement describing his or her reading habits, naming a selection of significant texts read recently, and explaining how those texts have influenced his or her understanding of literary art and of his or her goals as a writer.
F. Submit a letter of application, addressed to the Chairperson of the M.F.A. Steering, Assessment, and Curriculum Committee (SAC), in which the applicant explains why he or she feels qualified to succeed in the degree program and discusses how the MFA may facilitate his or her career plans.
G. Submit three letters of recommendation that speak to his or her academic and creative potential and his or her ability to undertake graduate study in Creative Writing.
You may submit the writing sample, personal statement, letter of application and letter of recommendation via e-mail (please send all attachments as MS-Word or plain text documents).
H. Complete all prerequisites, if any, determined by the Steering, Assessment, and Curriculum Committee (SAC).
I. Any student interested in applying for a teaching assistantship should also include a CV, a letter of application to teach, and two letters that speak to the candidate’s abilities or potential as a teacher.
Students must complete items A, D, E, F, and G, and I by no later than March 15 for enrollment in the succeeding fall semester or by August 1 for enrollment in the succeeding spring.




* Any student not meeting this requirement will be admitted to the Jackson College of Graduate Studies & Research as a NONDEGREE SEEKING STUDENT. The student may take additional coursework or retake courses in order to obtain the required GPA in this area and may then reapply for admission to the M.F.A. program.
