Why study film? Film can tell a story, or bring you news and information, it has allowed our society to become much more visually oriented. Film can manipulate time and space. However, only the aesthetic aspects of film were initially studied. We have come to realize that this is perhaps the least important aspect of films.
It is often said that art imitates life. Nowhere is this more illustrated than in film. Films reflect the dominating attitudes and practices of the time. By studying a film made during a certain period in time, we can better understand the thoughts and beliefs of that time. Films, more than any other medium, transport us to a different era and place us completely within the context of that era. Films are important in that they teach us about our own culture and history. By studying and understanding films we understand ourselves.
