English 3193: World Literature I
Doré Illustrations for Dante's Inferno

English 3193 is a survey of western and non-western literature up through the early Renaissance. All works are read in English translation. No British works will be included, since these are covered in other survey classes in the UCO English department.

The required textbook is David Damrosch et al., The Longman Anthology of World Literature, boxed set of Volume I A, B, and C. There will also be a number of photocopied readings.

There will be two midterm exams and a final, each consisting of 50% short answer/identification and 50% essay. Grades will also be based on a reading journal, two review papers, and class participation.
