In fall 2006, the College of Liberal Arts and the English Department of the University of Central Oklahoma hosted the first annual Everett Family Southwest Literary Award with a prize of $5000. The Everett Family Literary Award is open to all students and faculty members residing in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas, excluding current and former paid employees, faculty, and students of the University of Central Oklahoma.

The annual award focuses on a single genre for each contest cycle and will alternate among the genres of short story, novel, poetry, and biography/non-fiction on a biennial basis.

The Everett Family Southwest Literary Award is just one of the many generous donations given through the Everett Family Foundation Fund and honors the late Dr. Mark Allen Everett. According to Dr. Pamela Washington, Dean of the UCO College of Liberal Arts, "Dr. Everett made philanthropy a part of his life for over 40 years, and his legacy will live on through the Everett Family Foundation Fund."

"This award is unique because it aims to reward writers in this region of the country and because of the generous prize amount," said Dr. Constance Squires, Assistant Professor of Fiction Writing in the English Department at UCO. Dr. Squires, a fiction writer and winner of three national literary awards similar to the Everett Family Award, will oversee the selection process and the graduate student screeners and serve as preliminary judge.
