The debate team is one of the oldest co-curricular activities on campus.

The tradition of debate at UCO began with a student-organized intramural debate league in 1898. It became a university-sponsored extracurricular activity in 1903.

UCO won its first intercollegiate competition in 1916.

The debate team continues the tradition of excellence established during the early years of the university.

In 1990, the team won the collegiate national championship and in 2004 the team was ranked fourth in the country. Debaters from UCO compete against debaters from Ivy League institutions and NCAA Division I universities such as Harvard University, the University of Oklahoma, Dartmouth, Georgetown University and the University of Texas.
