UCO PROFFESSOR’S ART SELECTED AS BEST; TO BE DISPLAYED ON CAMPUS

An 18-foot-tall sculpture of ascending books symbolizing human’s continual quest for knowledge, titled “Flight,” was unveiled Jan. 17 on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma. President Webb, Dr Washington, Dr Chris Markwood and the artist with the sculpture
The 3,200 pound steel sculpture, chosen as the winning entry in the second annual “Outdoor Sculpture Competition,” sponsored by the College of Arts, Media, and Design dean’s office, is the work of Chris Domanski, assistant professor of scenic design and technical direction in the College of Liberal Arts.
The theme for this year’s competition is “Freedom Through Knowledge.”
Domanski’s visual illustration of the theme showcases a tower of 29 books, all of which gradually transform into birds taking flight.
As a professor, Domanski said he is constantly on a quest for knowledge, and the sculpture is his expression to that journey.
“The Statue will become an important symbol for UCO’s Liberal Arts studies, because it beautifully expresses our motto ‘Freedom Through Knowledge,’” said Dr. Pam Washington, UCO College of Liberal Arts dean.
“This generous gift enlivens and beautifies our Eastern entrance and we are happy to have such a meaningful piece of art,” she said.
“We hope that when students and faculty see the sculpture, they are reminded that education can give wings to their imagination,”
