UCO to Host the First Annual Everett Family Southwest Literary Award

In fall 2006, the College of Liberal Arts and the English Department of the University of Central Oklahoma will host the first annual Everett Family Southwest Literary Award with a prize of $5000. The Everett Family Literary Award is open to all students and faculty members residing in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas, excluding current and former paid employees, faculty, and students of the University of Central Oklahoma.

The annual award will focus on a single genre for each contest cycle and will alternate among the genres of short story, novel, poetry, and biography/non-fiction on a biennial basis. This year's contest cycle of submissions will feature unpublished short story manuscripts between 150-250 pages. Individual stories within the collection may be previously published.

The Everett Family Southwest Literary Award is just one of the many generous donations given through the Everett Family Foundation Fund and will honor the late Dr. Mark Allen Everett. According to Dr. Pamela Washington, Dean of the UCO College of Liberal Arts, "Dr. Everett made philanthropy a part of his life for over 40 years, and his legacy will live on through the Everett Family Foundation Fund."

"This award is unique because it aims to reward writers in this region of the country and because of the generous prize amount," said Dr. Constance Squires, Assistant Professor of Fiction Writing in the English Department at UCO. Dr. Squires, a fiction writer and winner of three national literary awards similar to the Everett Family Award, will oversee the selection process and the graduate student screeners and serve as preliminary judge.

This year's final judge, Rilla Askew, is a PEN-Faulkner nominee and has won an O. Henry Award, two Oklahoma Book Awards, and the Western Heritage Award. Her novel Fire in Beulah received the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation and the Myers Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. Dr. Washington explains, "As the author of both a short story collection and three novels, Ms. Askew is well qualified to evaluate the short story submissions."

All submissions must be received by October 16, 2006. The winner will be announced January 9, 2007, then presented at the Inaugural Everett Family Southwest Literary Award Reception on January 26, 2007, where he or she will have the opportunity to read an excerpt from the award-winning work. More information about the award, including manuscript formatting, is available at: http://www.libarts.ucok.edu/english/creative/everettaward.htm, or via e-mail at EverettAward@ucok.edu. No e-mail submissions are being accepted at this time.

Hard copy submissions should be sent, together with a $15.00 reading fee to:
